HONDA JAZZ

The Honda Jazz / Fit is expected to be launched in a tweaked form in India to take advantage of the taxation structure, is most likely to come strapped with a diesel engine. The new Jazz will take on Swift and Getz. Given the competition from Getz and Swift, Jazz / Fit is likely to sport a price tag of Rs 5 to 6 lakh to draw big volumes in the segment. While Jazz / Fit will hit the Indian roads next year, another small car from the Honda stable, designed for the Indian market, will be launched in the country thereafter. This model would be launched one notch lower in the B-segment and would compete with the likes of Hyundai Santro, Tata Indica and Maruti Wagon R.The Honda Jazz / Fit is a five-door hatchback automobile produced by Honda of Japan, that was first introduced in June 2001. The vehicle is known as the Fit in Japan, China, and in both North and South America. It is called the Jazz in Europe, some parts of Asia, Australia, Oceania, the Middle East, and Africa.

The Jazz / Fit is equipped with either a 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 liter i-DSI engine, or a 1.5 liter VTEC engine. All four engines are based on Honda’s L-series engine family. The 8-valve i-DSI (intelligent dual and sequential) engines use two spark plugs per cylinder, allowing gasoline to burn more completely; therefore, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced while maximum torque at mid-range rpm is maintained. The 1.5 L VTEC engine has the typical 16-valve configuration.

The car was the Japanese Car of the Year (In some year… i.e. when it was launched over there) and also had a national waiting list of 36000 orders at a time. The car was much applauded for its interiors, smooth engine, and city riding behaviors. The car was launched in UK, somewhere in 2002. So no new car is coming for India, but rather shall be customised for the country roads. I hope they don’t remove some good features from it in the process of customization. The car is being currently sold in Europe, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia.

2009 CHEVY CAMARO concept

Announced, on August 10th, 2006 by GM
Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner, Chevy will produce a new Camaro. Production will begin in late 2008 for a 2009 Chevy Camaro that should go on sale by the first quarter of 2009. It should be almost identical to the Camaro Concept car displayed at the 2006 North American International Auto Show.
Wagner was quoted as saying, "As evidence that we're not completely brain-dead, GM will build the Chevy Camaro". Well we will see I guess but this is certainly a step in the right direction. It does look like Chevy is trying to do better ... “The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the Camaro Concept continues to remind me of the uniquely iconic place our products can have in customers’ hearts,” Wagoner said. “Camaro is much more than a car; it symbolizes America's spirit and its love affair with the automobile.” From the sounds of it Wagoner is as puzzled as the general public is by some of the things not only Chevrolet, but the entire GM company, has done as of late.Hopefully they will continue to listen to the consumer and build something every Camaro enthusiasts can be proud of instead of a feeble attempt at a legend. Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper hopefully means what he says, “We intend to make the all-new Camaro relevant to younger buyers while retaining its appeal to current fans. The beauty of the best Camaros is that they have always been beautiful to look at with performance that rivals expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new-car buyers.”
GM officials have estimated that the new Camaro could get 30 or more miles per gallon on the highway with a V8 that goes to four cylinders at highway speeds. With gas prices probably being $3.50/gallon or more by the time the new Camaro comes out 30 or more MPG will be needed if not in effect required. Let's just hope it's not to little to late because 2009 is a long time away and a lot can change by then.

The new Camaro concept car keeps the long hood with hood bulge, short rear deck and narrow grille reminiscent of the classic Camaro, but mixes it with more contemporary styling, giving it a “retro” look. The interior adds to the retro feel with recessed gauges, a lengthy console and classic three-spoke steering wheel. The car is 186.2 inches long and rides on a 110.5-inch wheelbase. The wheels are 21s at the front and 22s at the rear, with monster 275/30 front and 305/30 rear tires, which should be able to handle the 400 horses from the LS2 6.0-liter V-8 engine powering through a six-speed manual transmission. The underlying platform is rear-wheel drive with fully independent suspension with McPherson struts up front and a rear multi-link configuration. Because the engine has a system that automatically disables half the cylinders when they’re not needed, the Camaro concept could get as much as 30 mpg on the highway.

FIAT GRANDE PUNTO

After the launch of this car in other countries, this car has been really successful, especially in Europe, thats why I like to call it "The Water for Fiat". Fiat understood that they had to offer a car which goes easy on the people. A car with style, safety features, performance and engines of Petrol and Diesel, and more from what they expect, and all this at a competitive price. They have done it. They will be making this car in its new Ranjangaon plant near Pune.

Engines, Power and Transmission

A big loss for Maruti, because the engines that the Swift offer for the Diesel version is the same that the Grande Punto has. So this will be a huge advantage for Fiat as they will be having the same engine from a popular car that offer better interiors with more space and more sportier styling. This engine was developed with the help of 3 companies - Fiat, Suzuki and GM, as TATA is an alliance of Fiat, this engine will also be put on the next generation Indica. Oh, yes this engine will also be used in the future GM cars.

There are 3 engines that fiat offers in different markets, that is a 1.2 FIRE 8V and 1.4 FIRE 8V Petrol that will produce 65Bhp and 77Bhp respectively, but there might be a possibility of them both coming. And then coming to the Diesel engines, a 1.3L and 1.9L Diesel engines are there, but the 1.9L is almost impossible of coming to India. If they bring it, a hatch of 120Bhp will be crazy. The 1.3 Multi jet 16V produces a 75Bhp and the 1.3 Multi jet Variable Geometry turbine produces 90Bhp. Its is said that which engine you use, the FE will be satisfying, and thats something weird and different from Fiat. The Fiat Grande Punto comes in a 5-speed manual Transmission. A carefully developed manual gear box not only gives you comfort and better torque at low speeds but also makes the gearbox more reliable. Fiat claims the mileage as 22.3kpl for 90bhp and 21.2kpl for 75bhp engine.

Exteriors and Safety Features

The Fiat Grande Punto is a beauty, and made from the Italian drawing boards of the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign. For us looking at the Siena and Uno, the Punto looks a generation ahead in design. The car might enter with Fiats new Red Logo followed by the New Fiat Linea. The swift has got competition in looks, the Swift was the only car in the segment that boasts the name "sporty", and now the Punto will be standing in front of the Swift. The headlights are pure inspiration of the Maserati along with the grille, fog lamps and body coloured side view mirrors with some plastic coverings, and a tail-lamp that is next to the window. The Fiat Grande Punto has an amazing result in the Euro NCAP tests a five-star overall score, which also got a 3-star pedestrian protection, and also comes with driver and passenger airbags and an engine immobilizer, its also equipped with ABS and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD)and also the usual seatbelt pretentioners. One thing that separates this car is the FPS, i.e the Fire Prevention System, that blocks the flow of fuel after a collision.
Interiors and Comfort
The Fiat Grande Punto is beautiful inside and out, the passenger will be inserted with comfort and high quality materials. The Swift will be scared of its interiors and the extra fitting that the Fiat has, and will definitely give a smile to the getz on interiors space. the dashboard top is shaped like a small step and the console with silver and an arm rest to comfort the driver. The cars interiors are available in serious black and colourful beige, but only one will be coming here, and still looks like the best in class. The driving seat shows equality to all, by helping them giving their best driving spot by height and steering adjusting. The Suspension region features a McPherson independent wheel in the front and an inter-connected, semi-independent at the rear. Servo-assisted hydraulic at the rear and ventilated disc brakes in the front. Audio controls are in the steering wheel and this will be the first in the category if they bring it. And do help yourself in a boot space of 275 litres with 60:40 split.

Safety and special features in international punto:
Brakes are ventilated discs in front with drums at rear; equipped with ABS and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) on the higher version. Further safety features include brake pedals that will break on impact, while the front seatbelts have pretensioners, load limiters and a fastened sensor. Another important safety feature is the passenger cannot get away with not fastening his belt — an insistent beep will sound until the seatbelt is fastened. I wish this feature must be offered in India as well. You can monitor your driver there is also a boy beep which you can preset it to a certain speed and if driver exceeds that speed, it beeps at you. Punto has been given maximum rating for passenger safety in Euro NCAP (European agency for safety testing). Fiat provides an extensive list for special features; armrest with storage bin, electric power steering (with a city mode, making the steering lighter for easier parking),air conditioning that can be varied for individual passengers,60:40 rear split seats, electric front windows (one touch up and down on driver’s side) and they work without the ignition switched on. On board computer for fuel range, current and average consumption, etc. These features are excellent but all depends on the price of the Indian version.

TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID

TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID
The Prius is a parallel configuration hybrid, a vehicle that can run on just the combustion engine, just the electric motor, or a combination of both. Toyota's design goals are to reduce the amount of pollution and to maximise fuel efficiency. To do this, it uses a gasoline(petrol)/electric hybrid powertrain, incorporating large batteries that are charged by the gas (petrol) engine directly or by regenerative braking. Either the engine or the battery (or both) can power the vehicle, depending on conditions. This gives it the acceleration and power of a standard car having a much larger internal combustion engine. Specifically, the Prius incorporates:

More efficient use of the internal combustion engine (ICE), reducing fuel consumption. The 1NZ-FXE engine uses the more efficient Atkinson cycle instead of the more common Otto cycle;
Two electric motor/generators, MG1 and MG2 are in the transaxle. The MG2 provides 50 kW (67 hp) @ 1,200 to 1,540 rpm and 400 N·m (295 ft·lbf) torque from 0 to 1,200 rpm, which significantly contributes to performance and economy. The MG1, with rpm from -10,000 to +10,000 rpm, provides the engine starter and counter torque for the electronic Continuously Variable Transmission;
50 kW IGBT inverter controlled by a 32-bit microprocessor, which efficiently converts power between the batteries and the motor/generators.
Lower coefficient of drag at 0.26 (0.29 for 2000 model), with a Kammback design reducing air resistance, especially at higher speeds;
Lower rolling-resistance tires on the 2000 model, reducing road friction;
Regenerative braking, a process for recovering kinetic energy when braking or travelling down a slope and storing it as electrical energy in the traction battery for later use while reducing wear and tear on the brake pads;
Sealed 168-cell nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery providing 201.6 volts; supplied by Panasonic EV Energy Co
Continuously variable transmission — the Prius uses a simple torque combining device, a planetary gearset. Through computer management of the electric motor/generator and secondary motor and the ICE engine throttle the effect is that the drivetraine behaves as though there were a continuously variable transmission. Toyota calls it the Power Split Device[4]. The electric motors and gasoline engine are connected to a planetary gear set which is always engaged, and there is no shifting.
Flexible resin gasoline tank, reducing the amount of hydrocarbon emissions in the form of escaped gasoline vapor; (US model only)

THE HYBRID WORLD

  • Future Hybrid cars
The hybrid cars market is on upswing and is growing very rapidly. America spend on gasoline every minute is about $200,000. Not to say about dependence on foreign oil. Hybrid vehicles are beginning to enter the market, and represent the first step in reducing America's oil consumption. The upcomming hybrid cars for this year and future. 1. DaimlerChrysler is going to introduce diesel electric Dodge Ram pickup which would be giving boost to mileage by as much as 15% 2. There is no details for this vehicle but Mercury Mariner SUV is going to be launched in 2007 3. Saturn Vue SUV would give a boost to mileage by 15% and would be introduced in 2006. 4. The other vehicles released in 2007 would be GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe which could give upto 35% of mileage boost and Chevrolet Malibu as 15%. 5. 2008 Chevy Silverado would be giving 35% boost to mileage. 6. 2004 Honda Accord Hybrid likely to be realeased in december would give V6 performance. 7. Lexus RX 400h SUV would follow in early 2005 and would have double mileage as compared to RX 300.
  • 2007 Nissan Altima hybrid car
Sales of hybrid vehicles have increased substantially and in fact, it has doubled in the first five months of 2007 as compared to last year sales. Nissan announced that it is going to introduce its first gasoline hybrid passenger car which will start its manufacturing at Smyrna plant some time from next year. No, Nissan is not going to build its own hybrid system but will be licensing the hybrid system from Toyota Motor Co. Nissan promised a better fuel economy in its coming 2007 Nissan Altima hybrid car with a increased performance. This is going to be the third hybrid vehicle in US after Ford's Escape hybrid sport utility vehicle and Toyota's Camry Sedan, which is also going on production floor next year.Regular Altima has a base price of $24,530 and introduction of hybrid is most likely to add another $3000 to it. However there was no formal announcement about the pricing of 2007 Nissan Altima hybrid car. Nissan contract with Toyota restricts it with only 50,000 units per year.Nissan is entering into the market where the top spot is captured by Toyota Prius followed by Honda Civic. Lets see how it could penetrate the market currently captured by these two carmakers.

New CHEVY CAPTIVA

Chevrolet Captiva is launched. The SUV has a 1991cc, 4-cylinder, 16 valve, VCDi diesel engine which outputs maximum power of 150ps@4000 rpm and torque of 320Nm@2000 rpm. The Rs.17.73 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) Captiva is available in five colors.

Engine and Powertrain:
Captiva is available both in diesel and petrol versions internationally. For India diesel is expected to be launched first which will be followed by petrol. Captiva diesel will take on pajero, X-trail, tucson and endeavour, while the captiva petrol will take on the only petrol premium compact SUV Honda CR-V. The diesel is a brand new, state-of-the-art common rail diesel engine jointly developed by GM Powertrain and VM Motori. Chevrolets first ever diesel compact SUV is powered by 2.0L, 16-valve unit which offers 150bhp at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 310Nm at 2000rpm. This same dieselengine is expected to power the soon to be launched Chevrolet Optra. Chances are that Chevrolet will throw in an automatic transmission as an option as well with five speed manual for Captiva. The petrol engine is a 2.4 litre in-line 16-valve four-cylinder, delivering 142bhp at 5,200rpm and a torque maximum of 220Nm at 4,000rpm. As the Captiva destined to developing markets, both the variable geometry turbo (VGT) diesel and refined petrol engine is expected to deliver decent fuel efficiency figure.

Inside the Captiva…
The Captiva offers a commanding driving position very important for this kind of cars.
The ergonomically designed, matte black and brushed aluminum look dashboard makes driving the Captiva a joy. The driver trip computer which provides valuable feedback like average fuel and speed, range, compass and external temperature and electrically adjustable rear view mirror will make the Captiva easy to drive. The Captiva looks about the size of a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara but offers an excellent storage space is, including a deep, wide glovebox, a two-tier front centre armrest, big door pockets, underfloor side compartments in the boot and a horizontal locker above the right rear wheel housing. There’s a sunglasses holder, too, plus cupholders and 12-volt power points. All models have alloy wheels, four electric windows but no auto-up facility because the required anti-trap mechanism is too expensive – the facility is to protect your fingers (nice facility but not found in Indian cars). A CD player and air con, plus the inevitable reminders for seatbelts and key in ignition. Storage for five-passenger car is 465 litres, rising to 930 litres when you lower the second row. However, if you use all seven seats, room for luggage is restricted to 85 litres. Whatever layout you choose, there is the benefit of opening rear glass, so you needn’t raise the entire tailgate to gain access to the boot.

Handling and Safety:
Like the CR-V, the Captiva is based on a car-like monocoque platform and comes with self leveling independent suspension, both at the front and rear wheels. With power steering aided by adjustable steering column (also telescopic on the diesel version), disc brakes on all wheels Chevrolet tag for this SUV is ‘Just like a car’. The main problem common among SUV’s is the traction control i.e. they fail at corners, however the suspension set-up of Captiva is said to give the vehicle a decent body control. Chevrolet claim the all-wheel drive model offers a safer and more secure drive in poor road conditions and it’s hard to argue with that contention, especially on our wet roads. The Captivas 4×4 set-up is an on-demand system, meaning that as driving conditions require, the rear axle is instantly selected via an electromagnetic coupling to give maximum traction through all four wheels. The set-up also seamlessly interacts with the ESP and ABS systems, enhancing driver control of the vehicle and safety margins. The ESP itself has additional functions like HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist), HDC (Hill Descent Control) and ARP (Active Rollover Protection). With these features I hope you can safely drive in muddy roads of your favourite touring place with Captiva.

SUZUKI KIZASHI

Suzuki unveiled a new concept car named ‘kizashi’ at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. This car is sure to cause fever to Honda and Toyota , ya, suzuki’s new concept is not a small car but a smart mid size sedan. The Kizashi – a name meaning ‘prelude’ or ‘foretaste’ – suggests what form Suzuki’s future will take. The D-segment initiative- the kizashi revealed in Frankfurt represents the beginning of the third phase of the world strategy. The main objective of this phase is status. The first phase of the new world strategy was implemented with the focus on ‘Sporty’, a philosophy that resulted in great success with the launch of Swift, Grand Vitara and SX4. The new Splash represents the second phase for Suzuki.

Suzuki which was founded in 1909 is regarded as the best small car maker all over the world. But despite the small car success, Suzuki has not been able to continue many of the customers to stay with the automaker when purchasing subsequent, larger cars. Suzuki feels obliged to respond to increasing expectations and is convinced that it’s essential to offer a wider product range in order to accommodate customers’ diverse lifestyles. Consequently, Suzuki has decided to expand its lineup to cover all segments from A to D in the next few years. Suzuki’s first-ever D-segment car ‘kizashi’ will stand at the top of the range. Suzuki’s new plan will be reflected in its Indian line-up too.

Suzuki which already sources larger cars from General Motors will now make its own D segment car through its kizashi concept. Suzuki targets an uncompromised combination of affordability and emotional appeal with the new kizashi. Suzuki which has already given a sporty hatchback -the Swift Sport plans to carry the same for the D-segment. At the same time, kizashi will ensure the cabin roominess that is essential in the D-segment

Though the Suzuki’s kizashi concept is powered by a new 2.0-liter turbo diesel, Suzuki plans to use a hybrid arrangement (an internal combustion engine provides the main propulsion, and an electric motor provides assistance whenever extra power is needed) to achieve environmental compatibility. Kizashi’s dynamic performance will be enhanced all-wheel drive (AWD) a technology that Suzuki has refined over many years.

A production version of the Kizashi is slated to appear in 2008, with worldwide sales to start in 2009. Being the Suzuki’s prime market, India will get the kizashi at the same time. In Indian context, Maruti may strap its 1.6L SX4 engine or a 2.0L vitara engine into the kizashi. Suzuki says its Kizashi is planned as the automaker’s future competitor to the Accord and Camry. But Indian news agencies says the ‘big car’(kizashi) from the Maruti Suzuki will compete with the likes of Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and skoda octavia which comes in a price bracket of Rs 10-12 lakh.

The Tomahawk is a Viper V-10 based motorcycle, a 500 horsepower engine with four wheels beneath it.Chrysler will be selling the original Tomahawk concept and nine replicas through Neiman Marcus, for up to $555,000 each. The motorcycles cannot be licensed, so they cannot be legally driven on public roads. A Chrysler spokesman told Reuters they were meant as rolling sculptures.Rumors had the Tomahawk selling for under $200,000, most likely at a loss or breakeven price, for publicity purposes - but still fully drivable. Wolfgang Bernhard, Chrysler's not particularly respected first mate, was said to be enthusiastic about that project, so much so that hundreds were projected to be built at under $200,000 each. They reportedly cost Chrysler over $100,000 to build (admittedly the work is outsourced).

The Dodge Tomahawk can reach 60 miles an hour in about 2.5 seconds, and has a theoretical top speed of nearly 400 mph. Each pair of wheels is separated by a few inches and each wheel has an independent suspension.. Bernhard said four wheels were necessary to handle the power from the engine. The Tomahawk remains on display at auto shows - though well out of reach of the general public, elevated on a special display.

NEW TOYOTA LANDCRUISER V8

The new Land Cruiser V8 replaces the current model and is the eighth generation of Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser large-scale SUV. It remains true to its heritage in being a thoroughbred off-roader. More than that, it is equipped with world-first technologies to ensure safety, comfort and secure handling both in the rough and on the open road. Toyota’s “no compromise” approach is clear in vehicles with traditional body-on-frame construction, crucial to the vehicle’s ability to tackle the toughest terrain. This tried and tested approach is matched by sophisticated handling, suspension and drivetrain systems that extend the off-road capabilities and enhance comfort and stability in normal driving.

New V8 diesel engine
The Land Cruiser V8 is powered by a new 4.5-litre V8 D-4D engine. It is the first Toyota eight cylinder diesel engine and is equipped with common rail injection technology. The unit is the most powerful Toyota diesel yet, producing 282bhp (286 DIN hp) and a prodigious 650Nm of torque, available from just 1,650rpm. Thanks to its high efficiency, the engine has the lowest emissions and fuel consumption in its class, producing 270g/km of carbon dioxide and an official 27.7mpg in combined cycle driving. It is extremely tough, too, engineered to perform faultlessly in temperatures from -30 to +50°C. The V8 is matched to a new six-speed automatic transmission with a manual sequential gear selection mode. As befits a serious offroader, it incorporates low ratio gearing.

World-leading suspension and handling technology
The Land Cruiser V8 is one of the most technically advanced four-wheel drive vehicles ever produced and is equipped with a series of advanced dynamic and handling features. These include the world’s first four-wheel Active Height Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension (4-Wheel AHC & AVS), a fully adjustable system that also provides spring rate control. Not only does this give exceptional performance off-road – wheel articulation is so great, the car can crawl over steps with a 630mm height difference without lifting a wheel off the ground – it regulates pitch and body roll on-road to maintain ride comfort and refinement. The full-time all-wheel drive has a new transfer unit governing the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles, with a newly developed Torsen torque-sensing limited slip centre differential, which gives improved cornering performance and driving stability. The transfer shift system lets the driver move from H4 (high) gearing to L4 (low) gearing by means of a rotary switch on the dashboard, when the vehicle is moving at low speed (up to 3mph).

Rugged and modern design
The vehicle’s design is rugged yet modern, developing styling cues from the Land Cruiser’s distinguished past while embracing themes from Toyota’s contemporary “Vibrant Clarity” design philosophy to bring the Land Cruiser brand fully up-to-date. An equally bold approach is taken inside the cabin where the sense of ruggedness and reliability is combined with comfort, quality and a great sense of spaciousness.

Luxury specification
The Land Cruiser V8 may be engineered to cope with extreme environments, but the cabin is designed to provide premium levels of comfort, convenience and safety. Available in a single luxury specification, it is equipped as standard with four-zone climate control air conditioning, full-map satellite navigation, Bluetooth, rear parking monitor, nine-speaker sound system with six-DVD autochanger and leather upholstery. A premium JBL audio system which includes i-pod integration and ICE (in-car entertainment) pack with rear seat DVD monitors are available as options. The flexible seven-seat interior is easily adapted to accommodate passengers or additional loads, with tumble-and-fold second row seats dividing 40:20:40 and the two rearmost seats folding to the side. High safety standards Occupants are protected by 14 airbags, including front knee airbags and curtain shield airbags along the entire length of the cabin. New HYUNDAI i-Blue Concept

Hyundai is showing off their first dedicated fuel cell design concept this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The i-Blue features Hyundai's latest in-house developed fuel cell stack, sending electricity to a 100kW motor driving the front wheels. The fuel cell stack is mounted under the floor of this new cross-over platform that is likely to form the basis of a future Hyundai production model.

Concept

Keeping with the show theme, "See What's Driving the Future," which focuses on sustainability and climate protection, the i-Blue demonstrates a significant step towards commercialization of Hyundai fuel cell vehicles. Unlike its predecessors which were built on SUV platforms, the i-Blue features a new D segment 2+2 crossover utility vehicle (CUV) body type. The smaller vehicle platform requires even greater engineering sophistication."The i-Blue is Hyundai's first-ever model designed from the ground up to incorporate fuel cell technology, marking a tremendous leap forward for our R&D program," said Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of Research and Development. "Our engineering team has successfully designed a more compact fuel cell vehicle, while still realizing the safety, comfort, convenience and driving range of a tradition internal combustion engine vehicle." Hyundai is making tremendous efforts to reach mass production of hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles a reality in the next decade.

Powered By Third-Generation Fuel Cell Technology

The i-Blue is powered by 100 kW and fuel cell stack. Fueled with compressed hydrogen (700 bar) stored in a 115 liter tank, i-Blue is capable of running more than 600 km per refueling and achieves a maximum speed of 165 km/h.The i-Blue's fuel cell stack is housed underfloor, not in the engine compartment as in the second-generation Tucson FCEV. This endows the car with an ideal 50:50 weight distribution for optimal driving and handling dynamics. Furthermore, by moving the fuel stack underfloor, the engine compartment is less densely populated providing better air flow and cooling. The i-Blue drives almost noiselessly and passionate drivers will be delighted by the acceleration of the i-Blue's powerplant. Like its predecessors, i-Blue's only emission is water vapor, fueling Hyundai's unwavering dedication to FCEV technology as a viable, environmentally friendly alternative to the internal combustion engine.

High Technology Meets Passenger Comfort and Safety

The i-Blue features a futuristic H2O flow-form on the inside, which results in a relaxing, stretched-out seating position for the driver and passengers. Drivers of the i-Blue will be excited about the innovative, aircraft-like steering wheel that integrates touch-scroll control pads, enabling the driver to keep his hands on the wheel while operating the vehicle's audio-visual systems. The 3D vision heads-up display (HUD) also adds safety and convenience. The outside environment is constantly projected through the vehicle's full-surround camera system. Many more future convenience features from Hyundai, such as side and rear view monitors, are shown on the i-Blue concept vehicle.

Exterior

As a crossover utility vehicle combining the strongest points of both a Sedan and a RV; and incorporating a design motive from the traditional beauty of Korea, the i-Blue has opened a new vehicle category. From the bonnet to the front fender, A-Pillar, Cabin and rear fender, the i-Blue's seamless cab forward type of surface provides a perfect form balance. From the TaeKuk theme of volume and surface in harmony, the character lines of the front and rear fender make for a sharp looking exterior body. The image of the front mask is similar to the design image of the Hyundai "Genesis" concept car, presenting the direction for future designs. The radiator grille and headlamp have been expressed as a crystal glass art to depict the water from the fuel cell system and, the power and dynamic image of the rear takes the shape of the horizontal and vertical form from the wings of an airplane.Cameras have been installed in the head lamp, rear combination lamp and high mountain lamp helping to realize a functional and high-tech design. The lamp system in the rear combination lamps have been designed to associate the beautiful and bright stars in space

World’s First Commercial Compressed Air-powered Vehicle

Alternative fuels have been attracting a lot of media attention lately and the very first commercial compressed air car (zero pollution car) is on the verge of production. Yes, I am talking about the Air Car, which has been developed by ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre. Approximately 6000 Air Cars will be built by India based Tata Motors and could probably be seen on Indian roads by next year.

The CityCat model will offer an average of 68 mph on a driving range of 125 miles. Refueling will be too easy and would take least of your time. A single fill-up is said to cost $2.00 and if the driver is not near to a compressor station, he can use the car’s integrated compressor to refill the tank in about 4 hours. The technology nehind the vehicle is to store electrical energy without the toxic batteries. So, we can say that The Air Car is an electric car with no electric motor. The only thing that the pipe of the emission-free vehicle throws out is the air.

Anyway, Air Car might not make its way to the North American streets. The guys behind the Air Car are already working on a hybrid version that would be using on-board, gasoline-powered compressor in order to refill the air tanks.

The KR's 5.4-liter V-8 Gets the Royal Treatment

Just like its namesake, the 2008 'King of the Road' packs a walloping dose of Ford performance power under its massive composite hood scoops. The Ford SVT-engineered 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 is treated to a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack that boosts horsepower to an estimated 540 and torque to 510 ft.-lbs., thanks to revised ignition and throttle calibration and a cold air intake system that replaces the stock unit.
Calibration modifications include advancing the ignition timing as well as re-mapping of the electronic throttle settings to provide quicker throttle response for better off-line and mid-range acceleration. Increased throttle response will be met with a sharper roar from the Ford Racing-inspired exhaust system.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission and 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, upgraded from the standard GT500's 3.31:1. Gear selection is courtesy of an all-new Ford Racing short-throw shifter making its debut on the KR. Topped with a white ball, the new shifter is 25 percent shorter than the unit on the GT500 providing for crisper, sharper shifts.
Ford SVT, Ford Racing and Team Shelby worked together to develop the KR's suspension tuning. Based on initial work by Ford Racing and the team at Shelby, often at Shelby's own facility on the grounds of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Ford SVT chassis engineers will apply fine tuning techniques to prepare it for the streets.
Chassis engineers worked closely with the engine department in a holistic approach to the development of the KR, tuning the suspension to best optimize the engine enhancements.
The GT500KR will feature unique spring rates, dampers, stabilizer bars, and strut tower brace, all designed specifically for the KR, to deliver the precision handling package.

The show car wears exclusive, Shelby-designed 20-inch, forged, polished aluminum wheels with special custom center caps, mounted on Pirelli rubber. Production models will arrive with an 18-inch version of the design.
Each KR model is identified by special 40th Anniversary KR badges on the fenders and grille, distinctive body colored mirror caps and Shelby lettering stretching across the front of the hood and along the rear portion of the deck lid. A special Shelby VIN tag is affixed to each vehicle, mounted in the engine compartment.
The all-leather interior features Carroll Shelby signature embroidered headrests and an official Shelby CSM 40th Anniversary GT500KR dash plate mounted at the top of the center stack.

2008 SUBARU IMPREZA

As expected, Subaru's compact cars are redesigned for 2008 with fresh styling, new features and slightly larger dimensions. The Impreza line consists of sedans and four-door hatchbacks in Impreza and sportier Impreza WRX form. The hatchbacks replace the previous wagon body style. SUV-flavored Outback models will retun, but Subaru hasn't yet released details; same goes for the high-performance WRX STi model.Every 2008 Subaru Impreza and WRX comes with all-wheel drive and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with horizontally-opposed cylinders. The base models have 170 horsepower, the sporty turbocharged WRX versions 224. Expecte the next WRX STi to have at least 300 horsepower.

All 2008 models offer five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmissions. Subaru says engine retuning has reduced emissions versus previous Imprezas while providing slight improvements to both fuel economy and low-speed acceleration. An antiskid/traction-control system is newly available -- and rare among mainstream compact cars. Newly standard are curtain side airbags, joining front torso side airbags and four-wheel antilock disc brakes. The 2008 Subaru Impreza and WRX ride a new platform and Subaru says the cars are more spacious inside thanks to a wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles) increased by 3.7 inches to 103.1. Sedans are 4.5 inches longer than before, at 180.3 inches; hatchbacks are 6.5 inches shorter than that, due to different rear-end styling. Width stays about the same, while height adds an inch or so. The new platform also brings a more-compact rear suspension, with a double-wishbone layout replacing a multilink design.

Outside, the 2008 Subaru Impreza and WRX bear a strong resemblance to the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback. This may not be coincidence, as the Mazda 3 has made a big impression on younger buyers both in Japan and North America.

The 2008 Subaru Impreza sports a new "corporate" grille: a U-shaped cross-hatch affair topped by a bright "spread wing" bar bearing the Subaru logo. Look for this theme to appear on other Subaru cars to replace the three-element "airplane" motif that most people thought unattractive. As before, WRXs are distinguished by a large functional hood air scoop and standard 17-inch wheels versus 16s, but other "rally racer" styling cues have been erased to create a more subtle and mature appearance. It also means WRXs look much like the base models, though there is an optional "aero" appearance package for extroverts. The grille's "wing" shape reappears inside on a new-design dashboard with space for an optional navigation system, Impreza's first. The navigation screen powers up for access to an available six-disc CD changer. Scalloped door panels help increase shoulder and elbow room despite the little-changed exterior width, while the added height and wheelbase should mean extra head and leg room for rear passengers. All models come with 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

You can't sell a credible "youth car" these days without a plug-in for digital music players, but the 2008 Subaru Impreza and WRX go a step further. With the optional navigation system comes a console-mounted plug-in for using the dashboard screen with a video DVD player or game console (PlayStation or Xbox).

Chevrolet Volt concept

Chevrolet Volt, a concept from GM showcasing its latest "E-Flex" technology. This features electric motors to propel the vehicle, with an internal combustion engine to provide recharging, as well as provision for ordinary plug-in charging. The Volt has a 3 cylinder turbocharged 1-litre powerplant to provide the recharging capability. This engine has a fuel tank of 54.5 litres capacity and is also able to run off E85 ethanol. The system can be adapted to suit various markets, and diesel, petrol, hydrogen and ethanol are mentioned as examples of the fuels that could be used by the recharger motor. Actual propulsion for the Volt is via a 160 bhp (120 kW) electric motor which provides a respectable 8 second sprint time to 60 mph, and a top speed of around 190 km/h (120 mph). The range is claimed to be 640 miles, including on-the-go recharging from the petrol engine, and a mere 40 miles without. The lithium-ion batteries can be recharged in about 6.5 hours using the plugin charger. The body is an attractive 4 seater with 4 doors and a lift-up tailgate. It is a small car overall, with a length of just 4318 mm, a width of 1791 mm and height of 1336 mm. The wheels are very large, at 21 inches, but are narrow to reduce rolling resistance. 195/55 R 21 tyres are fitted.

This general layout is considered a plug-in series hybrid design since mechanical power initially drives the generator, which in turn charges the battery pack. Power is then drained from the batteries to run the electrical motors which move the vehicle. The internal combustion engine does not have any mechanical linkage to the wheels (unlike current vehicles such as the Toyota Prius), and can run at a constant speed for optimal efficiency.

GM plans to keep the lithium-ion battery in a state-of-charge (SOC) range of between 30% and 80%, with the on-board generator starting to recharge the battery at the 30% level.GM has decided on a new descriptive terminology distinct from calling it a hybrid. They are calling the Volt an E-REV, for "extended-range electric vehicle".General Motors said it will have the Volt on the market in 2010. To help spur battery research, GM selected two companies to provide advanced lithium-ion batteries: Compact Power and Continental Automotive Systems. However, on August 9, 2007 GM selected A123Systems to provide batteries. Clearly, battery technology will have a large impact in determining the success of the car.

TOYOTA FT-HS Hybrid-Sportz CONCEPT

The world’s first hybrid-powered sports car, the Toyota FT-HS Concept. This front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car is projected to accelerate from 0-to-60 in the four-second range. That impressive result is achieved through a powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine coupled to a 21st century sports hybrid system. With this hybrid powerplant, Toyota is shooting for a total power output of about 400 hp. Other performance features include a lightweight, carbon fiber Kevlar roof which incorporates an aerodynamic longitudinal depression down its center, and a speed activated wing that elevates during high velocity driving.

The FT-HS’s styling is certain to cause a stir as Toyota refers to it as a combination of “perfect imbalance.” So-called “freeform geometrics” integrate fluid surfaces with hard corners, promoting airflow and reducing turbulence, which Toyota claims increases stability in high speed driving (translation: freeform geometrics is fancy terminology for functioning aerodynamics). “Integrated component architecture” is next in the design philosophy. This entails showing what needs to be seen–tail lamps spanning the width of the vehicle–and hiding what does not, al-la-retractable spoiler. Ultimately, the FT-HS styling goal is to achieve “subtractive mass”, which is a minimalist style that is not only lightweight but also looks lightweight, according to Toyota. The sharply sloped roof is actually a retractable hardtop, though rather than folding up, like metal origami, into the trunk, the roof slides back and then drops behind the front seats. That effectively turns the Hybrid Sports Concept into a two-seater.

The concept’s interior is said to be modeled after a driver’s cockpit , but also offers structural functionality. A carbon fiber beam replaces the space normally occupied by the instrument panel, offering structural rigidity as well as a place to suspend the driver’s controls. This beam adds to body stiffness, necessary when cruising with the open-top roof system stowed in the rear. Long live T-tops.
